About CBT Counselling & Psychotherapy
CBT Counselling & Psychotherapy is a premium counselling and psychotherapeutic practice centrally located in Sydney’s CBD.
Most of our clients work and live in a high-pressure environment which can sometimes lead to a range of stress related cognitive and behavioural disorders. It is not uncommon for example to treat clients suffering debilitating anxiety and/or depression.
These problematic disorders, and many others, can come about for a variety of reasons, sometimes stemming from unresolved family issues, sometimes with links back to one’s childhood, sometimes as a result of loss of or separation from a loved one, and sometimes from work-place pressures and interpersonal frictions, not to mention ‘burn-out’, and sometimes from substance dependence.
Our therapeutic approach is based on the concept that your mental health is equally as important as your physical health; and that nurturing your mental health is essential for living a truly fulfilled life. We believe that therapy should feel collaborative and empowering, rather than pathologizing.
We have a lot of information on our website which can be easily accessed through the following pathways. If you think we might be of help to you please feel free to make an appointment. We also have the option of a 10-minute free phone consolation to see if we’re the right fit for you.

Some Important Information
The difference between a Counsellor and a Psychologist
The ‘Counsellor vs Psychologist’ question is often overlooked, but there are differences between the two. To put it simply, Counsellors or Therapists could be considered experts in broad areas, whereas Psychologists have additional training and education on certain aspects of mental health; usually of the more serious kind. These differences become particularly visible when you see the type of disorders that they treat and the levels of severity in their clients. In some cases, psychologists may be able to treat conditions that a counsellor cannot – schizophrenia for example. Learn more >
Medicare & Insurance Rebates – ‘Mental Health Treatment Plans’
You may be able to claim back a proportion of your fees from Medicare if your medical doctor ‘GP’ assesses you to be eligible for psychological services under a ‘Mental Health Treatment Plan’ which may reimburse a significant proportion of the fees for up to 10 sessions (in many cases 20 sessions) per calendar year. In the first instance -before obtaining a Mental Health Treatment Plan- it could be a good idea to see a Counsellor here at CBT Counselling who might be able to deal with your presenting issues without the need to escalate things to the level of diagnosable disorder. If after a few sessions you and your Counsellor believe that a Psychologist of Psychiatrist would better be able to assist you we will help you in that step.
What to expect at your first Consultation
Your first consultation will be different from future consultations. The initial consultation session is a period for you and your therapist to get to know each other and get an idea of how to proceed. Future visits will likely be more therapeutic in nature. For example, in your second session, you may explore a specific symptom, problem, or past trauma you mentioned in the first session. Learn more >
In most cases, a Therapist is required to keep information discussed during therapy, private and confidential. CBT Counselling & Psychotherapy assures clients of a high-level of discretion and confidentiality. However, confidentiality is not absolute. Learn more >
